What You Need to Know about Typhoon Season

The typhoon season starts in May and ends in October, with July to September as its peak period. When specific warnings of tropical cyclone or storm surge are issued, there may be potential influence upon the traffic in and beyond Macao as well as activities and opening hours of facilities in the city. Currently, Macao’s Tropical Cyclone Signals are listed in signal no. 1, no. 3, no. 8, no. 9 and no. 10 depending on the strength of the wind.

Meaning of Tropical Cyclone Signals
Precaution Signal. A tropical cyclone is centred within 800 km of Macao and may affect Macao. Under the influence of a tropical cyclone, winds with sustained speed of 41 to 62 km/h are expected or blowing and the gust may exceed 110 km/h in Macao.
Safety Precautions
Prepare preventive measures and pay close attention to the latest information on tropical cyclones. Temporary squally showers may occur in Macao once being affected by strong rainband. People in open spaces should be vigilant. Drivers should pay attention to driving safety and strong winds.

Meaning of Tropical Cyclone Signals

The tropical cyclone continues to approach Macao. Winds with sustained speed of 63 to 117 km/h are expected or blowing and the gust may exceed 180 km/h in Macao. Signal No.8 is further divided into Signal No.8NE, Signal No.8SE, Signal No.8SW and Signal No.8NW, which indicates the possible wind direction in the next few hours.

Safety Precautions

Stay indoor as far as possible. Stay away from exposed doors and windows. Continue to pay attention to the latest information on tropical cyclones.

Suspend all outdoor and marine activities.

The cross-sea bridges will be closed at any time. Public should pay attention to the latest notice.

Meaning of Tropical Cyclone Signals

The tropical cyclone is further approaching Macao. In Macao, winds with sustained speed of 63 to 117 km/h are blowing and intensifying / expected to intensify significantly.

The centre of the tropical cyclone shall strike at the immediate approaches of Macao. Winds with sustained speed exceeds 118 km/h are expected or blowing in Macao, accompany with gust of great intensity.

Safety Precautions

Suspend all outdoor and marine activities.

Stay indoor as far as possible. Stay away from exposed doors and windows.

Tropical cyclones will have a serious impact on Macao.

A temporary lull means that the tropical cyclone is centred nearby and a sudden resumption of violent winds is expected. The places that are sheltered from the strong winds originally may become exposed. Public are advised not to relax their guard and pay close attention to the latest message of tropical cyclone.

According to the geographic features, historical record of water level and meteorological characteristic of the Macao Special Administrative Region, “Storm Surge” warnings are divided into following five levels:

The water level is expected to be below 0.5 meter above road level.  Main affected areas The water level is expected to be 0.5 to 1.0 meter above road level. Main affected areas

Take precautionary measures, such as moving objects to places that prevent flooding;

Avoid parking cars in an area prone to flooding or underground car parks;

Power supply system may be affected by flooding and cut-off, elevator(lifts) should be avoided;

Avoid heading to areas affected by flooding, such as basements and low-lying district;

Pay attention to the “Storm Surge” warning information closely.

Safety Precautions Advice

Take precautionary measures, such as moving objects to places that prevent flooding;

Do not park cars in an area prone to flooding or underground car parks;

Power supply system may be affected by flooding and cut-off. Do not use elevator(lifts);

Do not heading to areas affected by flooding and low-lying district, as sea water can rapidly invade land and cause sharply rise in water level;

Stay in a safe and high-lying area, keep away from low-lying district such as basements and underground car parks;

Pay attention to the “Storm Surge” warning information closely.
